Important: lithium batteries have no “memory effect” known from old nickel-cadmium packs. Conditioning a new battery with full cycles or draining it to zero before charging are tips from a previous era – today they are not just unnecessary, but actively harmful.
1Keep the charge level between 20 and 80%
Cells experience the most stress at the extremes of the scale: at deep discharge and while held at 100% for long periods. The 20-80% range is optimal for cell chemistry, and it is worth building your daily habits around it.
- Do not let the laptop shut down from a drained battery – deep discharges accelerate degradation more than any other usage factor.

- Use the power adapter supplied by the laptop manufacturer.
- When buying a replacement, match the parameters exactly: voltage, current and wattage, and stick to reputable brands.

3Watch the operating temperature
High temperature is, alongside deep discharges, the main battery killer – and the only factor that damages cells even when the laptop is switched off.
- Do not use the laptop on a blanket, bed or sofa – soft surfaces block the air intakes and raise the temperature of the entire interior, battery included.

Open the command prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport. The system generates an HTML report (the path appears in the console) with three key values:
- Design Capacity – the battery’s factory capacity,
- Full Charge Capacity – the current maximum capacity,
- Cycle Count – the number of completed charge cycles.
Divide the current capacity by the factory one – if the result has dropped below 60-70%, the battery qualifies for replacement. The report also shows capacity history over time, so you can see the pace of degradation.
macOS – battery health

6Storing the laptop for a longer period
If the laptop is going to sit unused for weeks or months, prepare the battery for the break:
- Charge the battery to 50-60% – the safest state for storage. Do not leave the laptop fully charged, nor drained to zero.
- Store the device in a dry place at room temperature, away from radiators and humidity.

What not to do – myths that shorten battery life
- “A new battery must be conditioned with three full cycles” – a myth from the nickel-cell era. Lithium batteries are ready to work from day one, and full cycles only wear them out.
- “You should drain it to zero before charging” – exactly the opposite: deep discharges are the fastest route to degrading lithium cells.
- “I’ll remove the battery and run on mains only” – technically possible in older laptops with removable packs, but the battery acts as a buffer protecting against voltage spikes and data loss during outages. In modern laptops the battery is built in and removing it is not an option.
- “Calibration repairs the battery” – calibration (a full discharge and recharge) does not regenerate cells. It only synchronises the percentage indicator with the real state – do it only when the readings behave illogically, and no more than once every few months.
